Louisville Western bests Oxford

At the Joe Machens Great 8 Classic

Maybe they just wanted to make things interesting.

The Louisville (Ky.) Western Warriors spotted the Oxford (Miss.) Chargers a 15-8 lead after one quarter in Saturday's winner's bracket semifinal game of the Joe Machens Great 8 Classic.

The Warriors then came roaring back, outscoring the Chargers 41-27 during the next three periods to win 49-42.

The victory earned Louisville Western (6-3) a date with Upper Arlington (5-1) in the championship game of the event. Game time is 6 p.m. today at Fleming Fieldhouse.

With the loss, Oxford (9-2) falls into today's 4:30 p.m. third-place contest against Tulsa (Okla.) Central (2-4).

Oxford started the game with an 11-3 spurt, but watched the lead dwindle to 20-19 by halftime. Louisville Western hit its first shot of the second half - a layup by Chris McCraw - for its first lead of the game at 21-20. The third quarter featured four lead changes and three ties, one of those being at 33-all, which was the score heading to the fourth quarter.

Oxford's last lead came at 40-38 on a layup by Josh Gibbs, but Louisville Western ended hte game on an 11-2 run.

Kittrell Withers pumped in a game-high 24 points for the Warriors, while Daykice Crumes added 13.

Gibbs and Cortez Jones scored 10 points apiece for Oxford.
