Your Opinion: Nothing to be gained by kowtowing

Dear Editor:

I read with interest the News Tribune's editorial concerning the vetoed gun legislation, which nullifies federal gun control statutes and makes it a crime in Missouri if federal agents attempt to enforce federal law.

Some Democratic members of the Legislature have publicly stated they may vote to override the governor's veto under the assumption that the NRA may not spend money for their defeat in future elections. These Democrats are either naive or foolish.

Do they have any assurance from the NRA that they will be exempt from future NRA negative campaigning? Have they forgotten that the NRA raises millions of dollars for the express purpose of opposing any candidate for office that is not radicalized on the gun issue, which I assume these Democrats are not. By voting the override, these Democrats will assist the NRA in passing unconstitutional legislation and will later discover they are still pilloried by the NRA.

This issue is not about anti-gun but about anti-federal Constitution. It is not about supporting the NRA but about supporting the USA. It is sad to see legislators not understand this and gain nothing in exchange.
