Your Opinion: Require labeling for GMOs in foods

Dear Editor:

Eugenics (yü-?je-niks) is the bio-social movement which advocates practices to improve the genetic composition of a population, usually a human population.

It is a social philosophy advocating the improvement of human hereditary traits through the promotion of higher reproduction of more desired people and traits, and reduced reproduction of less desired people and traits. (from Wikipedia)

Since Francis Galton first promoted the idea in 1883, the concept has been steeped in controversy. It seems that eugenics has once again reared its ugly head here in our own country on a massive scale.

Recent scientific research in Brazil on the health effects of glyphosate (known commercially as Roundup) has concluded that Roundup is essentially a destroyer of fertility, particularly in men, and at levels far below what is commonly found as residue in the conventional food supply from GMO (Genetically Modified) ingredients.

GMO crops are altered so they can withstand higher doses of Roundup, which results in a higher residue in the food produced.

The Organic Consumers Association estimates that 70 to 80 percent of the processed foods in our supermarkets contain GMOs. Unfortunately we don't know which items contain them because food manufacturers don't have to label them.

It's time for us to demand that all GMOs in our food be labeled. We deserve the right to make intelligent choices about what we feed our families.

A national law passed by Congress is what's needed. If they fail to act then we can demand labeling on a state by state basis. We need to demand action now.
