Blue Tigers swept at Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. — The Lincoln University baseball team dropped to 3-23 on the season after getting swept in a three-game series this weekend at Fort Hays State.

The series started with Fort Hays State sweeping a Saturday doubleheader.

In th efirst game, the Tigers got a run in the bottom of the fifth and made the lead hold up in a 6-5 victory.

Lincoln had rallied from a 5-0 deficit with four runs in the fourth and a run in the top of the fifth, but couldn’t keep Fort Hays State off the board.

Brad Wright had a single, double and one RBI to pace Lincoln on offense, while Jonathan Grishman had a single and a double. Clint Cashen and Logan Smith had one hit and one RBI apiece.

Cameron Moss (0-6) took the loss in relief, as he pitched the final two innings and allowed one earned run on four hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Joe Jungmeyer pitched the first two innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits, one walk and one strikeout. Joshua Register worked the next wo and did not allow a hit or a run while walking two and striking out three.

In Saturday’s second game, the Tigers scored in every inning and won 15-2 in a game shortened to seven innings due to the run rule.

Lincoln managed just four hits in the contest, with half of them coming from Ben Stewart, who had a single and a two-run homer.

Scott Jones (2-6), the starter, took the loss for the Blue Tigers. He allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits in three innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Darren Lasley gave up eight earned runs in just 21⁄3 innings. He allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out two. Smith got the final two outs and also gave up one walk and one hit to go with one strikeout.

On Sunday, Lincoln jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but could not hold on as Fort Hays State captured a 5-2 win.

An RBI single by Wright and an RBI double by Colby Shepherd in the fourth accounted for all of Lincoln’s runs.

Stewart went 3-for-4 for the Blue Tigers, as he once again accounted for half of the Blue Tigers’ hits all by himself.

Blake Jones started and got a no-decision for Lincoln, as he worked 41⁄3 innings and gave up one earned run on three hits and one walk.

Nathan Lueckenhoff (0-1) came on and gave up four earned runs on six hits. He struck out two. Jacob Busch pitched the final 12⁄3 innings and gave up one hit and one walk. He got one strikeout while not allowing a run.

Fort Hays State improved to 19-14 overall and 15-13 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Lincoln, which dropped to 3-23 and 2-19, will host the Central Missouri Mules in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
