Your Opinion: Response on clerk's decision

Dear Editor:

Mike Backer's opinions ("Voters Inconvenienced") concerning County Clerk Hubbard are opinions, not fact. Opinions can be influenced by devotion to party politics, a devotion that frequently colors rhetoric of most of us, self included.

The claim Mrs. Hubbard deliberately wants to suppress voter turnout and disenfranchise anyone is unprovable but damaging. Readers who feel threatened by "big Government" may relate to that charge without investigating the truth of the charge. Mike is playing on that sentiment at the expense of Hubbard's personal and professional reputation. Hubbard's passion for this country, liberty and the right to vote is why she ran for and won office. Her door-to-door campaign won the trust of Callaway voters.

Mike's claim, "It is not about saving money" is a lie. Mike knows it is about money. The real issue for Mike may be that Hubbard is working to save taxpayer money - a concept often rejected by people who spend other people's money.

Politicians in both parties favor cutting spending as long as their favorite interest continues unchallenged. Rather than criticize Hubbard for cutting cost, this county needs to say, "Thank You." The small turnout at the meeting held to listen to constituents complaints is a testimony to the support Hubbard has throughout the county as well as in the Round Prairie township.

Mike bypasses reason to have readers focus on emotion by his choice of words: "doesn't care," "a blatant attempt to suppress ... and disenfranchise," "simply because." Mike claims, "She doesn't care about the inconvenience ... they are not important to her or the voting process," That is a lie. Out of respect for constituents, Hubbard met to listen, not ignore their concerns.

Her job, not a personal choice, is to oversee the voting process, including costs. She is charged with making decisions for the good of the county, not on one precinct. Of 700 voters, 100 plus (some of whom were supporters of the decision) were in the meeting. Mike represents a small percentage of the voters in his precinct. His attempt to impugn Hubbard's reputation and professionalism is not based on fact.
