Local squads start cross country year

The good news for Jefferson City is Tuesday's Jim Marshall Invitational was the first meet of the year.

There's plenty of time to work out the kinks.

The Jays took first place while the Lady Jays were second overall (first in their class) in Tuesday's race at Cole County Park.

"We had some positives, but we're certainly not close to where we need to be," Jefferson City cross country coach Brett Phillips said.

All schools ran the two-mile race together, although the end results were broken down into large and small-school divisions. The St. Genevieve girls were well ahead of Jefferson City, finishing with 19 points compared to Jefferson City's 29. All seven of their runners finished in the top 12, led by Taylor Werner who finished in 12:29, 45 seconds faster than Jefferson City's Kaylee Ruff, who took second.
