Our Opinion: Romney gains momentum from debate

Who won the debate?

In the aftermath of Wednesday’s presidential debate between Democratic incumbent Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, that question invariably is asked.

The tactful answer is: The issues in the presidential debate are too complex and too vital to the American people to be summed up by identifying a winner.

The correct answer is: Romney.

Observers have characterized Obama’s performance as “lackluster,” “cautious, at time listless” and “on the defensive.”

In contrast, Romney’s demeanor has been described as “fiery” and “energized.” He was identified as “the aggressor without going overboard.”

And, although some Democrats reluctantly conceded Romney’s performance was impressive, they contend the contest is far from over.

We agree.

The remaining weeks mark the homestretch in the campaign for the presidency.

Americans can expect an onslaught of campaigning and advertising, as well as more debates.

The Denver debate — on domestic issues — was the first of three between the presidential candidates. They will meet next in a town meeting format on Oct. 16 in New York and will engage in a foreign policy debate on Oct. 22 in Florida.

In addition to the presidential debates, the next in the series will feature Vice President Joe Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan, Romney’s running mate. It will be Oct. 11 in Kentucky.

The final weeks present opportunities and challenges for both Obama and Romney.

Can the president convince voters he deserves four more years to pursue his prescribed agenda?

Can Romney build on the momentum from Wednesday’s debate and make the case his policies and programs are preferable?

Continue to read, listen and examine as Election Day nears.

Dear editor, When will the Republican News Tibune actually talk about the content of the debate and do some fact checking on both sides. Was Obama truthful in what he said? Was Romney Truthful in what he said? Don't be afraid to tick off the republican money around here because i sure don't ever see anything in here about republicans doing wrong unless it is already national news. Very short coverage of Todd Akin. For the most part if it is about a republican your writers won't even touch it they pull it from the AP. That way the old money around here can't blame you.

With everything that is out there about all of the lies told in the debate; the only thing you write about is how Romney was fiery and energized. The devil is in the details and his own campaign said he lied after the debate. But like the Republicans said "we are not going to let a little thing like facts get in the way of our campaign!" That istatement is the Biggest window into the GOP's ideas and morals right there!

1 his tax plan (no details just hire me and i will show u later.) 2 his medical plan says he has everything Obamacare has but on Leno Or Letterman whichever one he was on he said his healthcare plan was to put it all on the states. 3 Education Cuts. Once again in debate said no cuts to education outside of debate education should go to the states and he agrees with his running mates plan which cuts Pell grants to education therfore meanin Cuts to Education.

You cannot be this nieve to believe what this man says without any details or anything just on a mans words.

4 they told you they were lying when they said they would not let little things like facts get in the way of the campaign. (psst if you didn't already know that is code for we ar goingg to lie our azzez of to win.)

Please, Obama does not know what is going on in this country, they still have not read what the EX-Insurance executive wrote into Obama Care. We need everyone working and paying taxes. We need to quit giving to those who refuse to work. There are jobs out there just not nice white collar jobs. We need to keep WIC,food stamps and welfare for those that need a TEMPORY hand up and those that absolutely cannot work.

You point out one lie from Romney. The left is running around calling him a liar, but they are failing to point out one item that he lied about. Just that he's a liar. Do some fact checking on any of the major news sites, they all have them. Try to pick out something other than ABC, so you get both sides of the story. There were bald faced lies coming from obama on the economy, the subsidies to oil (the breaks don't go to Exxon, but to the little driller ops), the 90 Billion he gave to green energy, etc. etc. His lies about what Romney's plan is. That didn't work to well when he tried it to Romney's face. Obama is lost and fumbling.

why don't you check out Snopes, abc cbs nbc cnn Msnbc leans too far left to be trusted and Fox news leans too far right to be trusted.

The CBO but i guess they are partisan too.

Better yet just go back and listen to romney and ryan talk about there plans from one week to the next and the plan ichanges depending on who he is talking too. Just like did you notice that at the debate now his healthcare will have everything that Obamacare has Kids to 26 on insurance, cover preexisting conditions. Everything but then few days before on Leno or Letterman he said that would be up to the states to require preexisting conditions. Insurance companies allowing kids to stay on the plan only started after Obamacare was passed they didn't offer those things before the ACA was passed. I mean just use a little common sense when you listen to him say 5 different answers to the same question. And i just can't vote for someone that cannot give any specifics other than to say elect us we are better and we will show you our specific plans and details after you hire me. Thats like going to a job interview and saying I have a plan to take your business to the next level. Hire me and put me on the payroll and then i will let you see my plan. If you owned a business you would not hire that person. Need to know the facts upfront before you give them the job. Hop you can agree with at least that much.

Insuring children and off spring until 26 or even 56 has always been available. You can insure anyone with the right amount of money Obama-Care just made it mandatory on company negotiated policies and thereby increased the cost to the employees and made paying the fine for not offering insurance more attractive.

Nothing is FREE ever. Someone pays for it one way or another.

That is right Conner, nothing is FREE! I am tired of the Medical business increasing their rates on me, and everyone who has Insurance to pay for all those who do not pay, or are not willing to buy insurance to pay? Do you think that the Business who does not pay for insurance, will charge the same price for a Job or item that someone that does? If you think they do not, you are mistaken. Rob

I think a business will eventually charge as much as they can get away with regardless. Sometimes it takes them a while to hit the right mark I am sure. But why blame the business for healthcare costs? Why even blame the insurance companies? It was government intervention into the healthcare and insurance world that has set this trap for us. Just like education. Once the government starts throwing money at something the price begins to climb and never stops.

Welcome to the club, I could get treated back at Dr. Klebbas back in the 70s to almost to 90, and never had insurance, paid what I could until it was paid! Now I get a $500.00 blood test every 6 months, and they cannot even figure out how to bill me, or my insurance? Businesses will charge what ever they can get away with. Like the Non Union, and the Union. The Non Union will bid right under the Union, the material is the same, the labor is the same, and they will put all, but maybe $2.00 an hour labor, in their pocket. It happens all the time, but when one of their employees get sick better hope his wife has insurance on him. They will drop him like a hot potatoe! Then he just went from Romneys 49% to 47%. You are younger than I, you may be setting tall at the moment , but wait, 20 years goes fast! Then you best hope you played your cards well! Rob

MO4LIFE:

How about ODUMMA'S healthcare plan? who knew what was in it? Nasty Nancy Pukosie said "we have too pass it to find out whats in it" I would trust Romney way more than that Illegal, Muslin, Communist guy we have shamefully sitting in the white house.

As I must get up at 3AM every morning, I have yet to see the debate, and therefor have no opinion as to who won or lost, or more to the point, who lied and who did not. However, after reading the responses in this forum, I would suggest to all that we step back from our passions, as they seldom, if ever, resolve any issue. Accusations of "illegal, Muslim, Communist..." add nothing to the conversation. Furthermore, from what I have gleaned from a variety of mainstream news sources, government statistics, and even pundits, my presidential preference is resolved, as it is for most who have responded. Have faith that our system of "checks and balances" will survive regardless of who wins. Now stop arguing and vote.
