HONOLULU (AP) - Stanford snapped defending national champion Baylor's 42-game winning streak Friday, winning 71-69 when player of the year Brittney Griner missed a short turnaround at the buzzer.
Griner scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half, helping the Lady Bears rally from a 14-point deficit in the first half. Her shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim and Stanford celebrated the victory. It was the Lady Bears' first defeat since losing to Texas A&M in the regional finals of the 2011 NCAA tournament. Baylor went 40-0 last year.
Chiney Ogwumike scored 18 points to lead the fourth-ranked Cardinal (3-0), who lost to Baylor in the national semifinals last season by 12 points. Her reverse layup gave Stanford a four-point lead with 22 seconds left.
Destiny Williams responded with the first 3-pointer of her career to pull Baylor (2-1) within one.
Toni Kokenis made one of two free throws. Baylor got the rebound and advanced the ball to halfcourt before calling timeout to set up the final play.
It was the fifth-longest winning streak in NCAA women's history. Stanford also ended UConn's NCAA record 90-game run in 2010.
Baylor had to play the last 35 minutes of the game without preseason All-America guard Odyssey Sims, who strained her hamstring early in the first half.
No. 10 GEORGIA 62, SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 46
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Anne Marie Armstrong scored 14 points and Erika Ford added 10 to lead Georgia to a win over South Carolina State.
Georgia (3-0) forced 29 turnovers by South Carolina State (1-1) and won the rebounding battle 51-33.
Tiara Knotts led South Carolina State with 13 points and Paris Alston had 11 rebounds.
With 6:36 to play, Alston scored on a layup to pull South Carolina State to 50-41, but Georgia scored eight straight points to pull away.
Georgia capitalized on a brief scuffle with less than 6 minutes to go for a rare five-point possession. S.C. State's Fannie Goodwin was called for a technical foul, and Armstrong hit four straight free throws. Georgia kept the ball, and Jasmine Hassell added another free throw to put the host Lady Bulldogs ahead 58-41.
No. 15 NEBRASKA 77, NORTHERN ARIZONA 55
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Jordan Hooper scored 27 points to help Nebraska beat Northern Arizona.
Hooper, who had 32 points in last season's 97-88 double-overtime win over Northern Arizona, hit 9 of 14 shots - including five 3-pointers. Emily Cady added 13 points and four steals for the Cornhuskers (3-0), while Lindsey Moore had 10 points and nine assists.
The Lumberjacks (0-3), who are missing two starters due to injuries, got 16 points from Tyler Stephens-Jenkins and 13 from Aubrey Davis. Friday's game marked the 1,000th in Northern Arizona women's basketball school history after the program began in 1974.
