Lafayette interchange plans take shape

Unapproved preliminary plans for the new Lafayette interchange propose affecting several neighboring streets, as well as overpasses on Jackson and Chestnut streets.

At the kickoff meeting for the Lafayette Street Interchange Community Advisory Group, several key issues were presented and discussed, including how the project may impact neighboring properties, streets and institutions.

The Lafayette Street interchange with the Rex Whitton Expressway, a cost-share project with the city, county and state, is slated to begin construction in the fall of 2014.

Mike Dusenberg, transportation project manager with the central district of the Missouri Department of Transportation, said the unapproved preliminary plans include two major roadway issues dealing with Miller and Elm streets.

They could be tied together with the Laufayette roundabouts. Kind of like the two roundabouts on Stadium.

So cool!!!

We need roundabouts at every intersection. Think how much better the Tri-Level would be if it were a pure roundabout.

Now, THAT'S funny. The images you've conjured are indescribable. :)

God yes! a Tri-Level roundabout! Just imagine a truck load of ball bearings getting caught in it and going round n round n round, 'til it tips over . . . a giant pinball machine . . . oo, I need a cigarette

What is everyone's issue with roundabouts? I agree the 2 back to back on Stadium was moroonic (really NT, this filter is a crock!), but the rest seem to be working quite well.

The roundabouts JC and in some spots Columbia put in are way too small. Drivers with even small trailers cannot actually make the turns without hitting the curbs. I have a number of horse owners who buy hay from me and all of them when they come to pick up their bales complain about the small size of the roundabouts in JC. At least the ones who have to navigate them.

If people would obey the yield signs it wouldn't be as bad but in general I don't care for roundabouts.

I wonder how many people forget the raised, non-landscaped ring is for trucks and trailers to hop onto in order to make the trip around the roundabout easier. This is why that particular portion of the roundabout is called a truck apron.

A lot of horse trailer are so low to the ground that they would "high center" on the aprons

I'm sure glad they got all those houses cleared out since it's only 2 years until they begin!

Sometimes I think people are joking on this forum. People are still harping about the roundabouts as if someone imposed some way-out scientific experiment on us. The roundabouts have been the standard in most cities for some time now. They work quite well, although I see the point about large trucks and people towing large trailers. I believe the truck apron should solve that. In other cities, I never see problems but many people here still stop without warning or tailgate. If you add "knowing how to drive" to the equation, problem solved.

Knowing how to drive.. they think roundabouts are bad wait for the first snow!! People suddenly panic "omg whats this white stuff on the ground I must drive faster!!!"

They are just too small. That is the main problem. When one car is in the roundabout, even on the opposite side, everyone has to stop and wait to allow it to exit before they can go. If the roundabout was bigger, there would be more time to judge the speed and the time, so then two or three cars could use the roundabout at once.

Of course much of the problem is due to old people who cannot accurately judge distances and speeds of other vehicles and make quick decisions. They always stop at the roundabout, even when it is empty. If we could get the bad drivers off the road, and maybe have yearly high-stakes performance-based drivers exams for everyone over 65, things would be a lot better.

I'm not trying to be funny, but the only thing in the entire plan that I like whatsoever is the roundabout. What an awful, senseless mess, otherwise.
