Area athletes aim to defend state track titles

Several area athletes will look to defend their state titles when the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 1-2 Track and Field Championships get under way today at Dwight T. Reed Stadium.

Three defending champions will have the chance to repeat today.

Leading that group is California’s Sydney Deeken, who will look to claim another title in the Class 2 girls high jump.

In the Class 1 girls portion of the event, Vienna’s Emma Schiermeier will be looking to repeat in the long jump.

Also today, Vienna’s Corey Schoene will look to repeat as champion in the Class 1 boys pole vault.

On the boys side, Christian Brune of the Comets will be looking for a three-peat Saturday ....
