Council approves overlay contract

After some debate, the City Council approved adding nearly $200,000 to the year's overlay contract, bringing the total budget to roughly $1.2 million in asphalt overlay projects.

At the City Council meeting Monday, council members approved the contract with Jefferson Asphalt Company for the 2012 mill and overlay construction projects.

The council also authorized nearly $200,000 in added funds for the program, which was almost doubled this year to $1 million.

Public Works Director Roger Schwartze said the extra $196,000 comes from the city's unspent funds on salt after the mild winter. Salt was originally budgeted for $275,000 this year, and the city "s stock piles are filled to capacity.
