Saturday's MLS Capsules

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Joel Lindpere scored to help the New York Red Bulls win their first game since scoring star Thierry Henry was injured, 1-0 over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night.

The marquee matchup between Major League Soccer's highest-profile teams missed some of its usual luster without Henry, the French player expected to be sidelined up to one month because of a strained hamstring.

Lindpere scored in the 19th minute and the Red Bulls held on to beat the Los Angeles squad that knocked them out of playoffs last season en route to the title.

New York improved to 5-3-1, and Los Angeles dropped to 3-5-1.

D.C. UNITED 2, TORONTO FC 0

TORONTO (AP) - Chris Pontius and Hamdi Salihi scored second-half goals and D.C. United beat Toronto FC, relegating the Reds to the worst start in MLS history at 0-8-0.

Toronto broke the record of 0-7-0 set by Kansas City in 1999. The league record for the longest overall losing streak is 12 by the New York-New Jersey MetroStars in 1999.

Pontius curled a left-footer past the diving Milos Kocic in the 55th minute, and Salihi scored in the 75th after Toronto failed to clear a corner kick. D.C. United improved to 5-3-3.

Toronto's lone victory this season came March 14 against Los Angeles in CONCACAF Champions League play. Overall in MLS, CONCACAF Champions League and Canadian Championship play, Toronto is 1-9-3.

Bernier's 63rd-minute spot kick was set up when Aurelien Collin pulled down Lamar Neagle in the penalty area on a breakaway in the 62nd. Martins opened the scoring in the first half, taking a layoff pass from Justin Braun and driving a left-footed shot just inside the left post from 25 yards.

TIMBERS 0, CREW 0, TIE

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland goalkeeper Troy Perkins knocked Josh William's header over the bar in the 66th minute to keep Columbus at bay in a scoreless draw.

Both teams, struggling with injuries for the match, have just two wins apiece. The Timbers (2-5-2) are last in the Western Conference, while the Crew (2-4-2) are ninth, just ahead of winless Toronto, in the East.

Both of Portland's victories have come at Jeld-Wen Field, but Columbus goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum didn't let a shot through, making six saves. The Crew, playing in their 500th regular-season match, have been shutout four times this season, with six total goals and just one goal on the road.
