Your Opinion: Leash laws needed in county neighborhoods

Dear Editor:

It's good to see the issue of unleashed dogs in suburban neighborhoods of Cole County is finally getting some much-needed attention.

Living in the same neighborhood as Ms. Camp I too have been harassed by dogs running at large and witnessed their destructive behavior in my own yard.

Contrary to Commissioner Hoelscher's comment about "one or two people ruining things for everyone" there is quite a number of pet owners in this neighborhood (which incidentally is within one-tenth of a mile of the Jefferson City limits) that allow their dogs to run unrestrained.

Animal control officer Ms. McGrail has responded to complaints that I have filed regarding nuisance dogs and was met with the same dismissive attitude by the dog's owners that she reported at the recent county commission meeting. It is unfortunate that some people who choose to own dogs also choose to not be responsible for them.

Chief Deputy Captain Wheeler reports McGrail has the highest call volume of any of their deputies. This is a clear indication of a need to strongly consider leash laws for residential neighborhoods in Cole County.
