Mo. House backs firearm discrimination measure
Thursday, March 8, 2012
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri House has advanced legislation making it illegal for employers to discriminate against current or prospective workers because they own or use guns.
The measure would forbid companies from turning people down for jobs or treating them differently because they have a concealed carry permit or have used a firearm in the past.
The House bill is sponsored by Wanda Brown, a Republican from Lincoln. She says treating workers differently because they own or use guns amounts to discrimination that violates their Second Amendment rights under the U.S. Constitution.
Democrats largely opposed the bill. They said gun ownership is a voluntary choice, unlike other factors protected by anti-discrimination laws such as race or gender.
The bill must be approved once more by the House before it goes to the Senate.

Seems silly to have to waste time on a law like this, but I suppose there are those whose only exposure to the joy of firearms is Hollywood's interpretation (rap artists and pro football players included).

Why? Has anyone ever actually been turned down for a job for owning a firearm? I've never even been asked that question in an application or interview. Is this legislation in search of a problem? Just to make some point? Is Wanda Brown just throwing up some dumb new law so anyone who opposes it is "anti gun rights?"
If there is a question, shouldn't the legislature have hearings to get testimony from people who have been discriminated against before throwing some bill out there? Get back to work, Wanda.

A family member says that state government discriminates against its own employees and will not let them C&C in their workplace. That sounds a bit hypocritical.

Well of course you don't carry in state buildings. There's little signs by the front doors that say no firearms are allowed in the building. It's a big joke in my offices, that prospective gunmen will see the sign go, "Aww! Now I have to think of some other way to kill people!" or that we're supposed to beat the bad guys over the head with it.
And frankly, if it's concealed then who's going to know if you carry. While I could see my bosses pitching a fit if you got caught, it's not like they ask you or frisk you. For all I know half our female staff have a gun in those big purses they carry. Guys would have more problem. Maybe it's sex discrimination?
I'd like to know what prompted this law and whether there's been any cases where such discrimination has happened.

You are more than welcome to carry a purse! Just be careful, everyone in your family will think you carry it so that you can carry their stuff. :)
When you go through the C&C course one of the things stressed is that you do not carry in a federal or state building. You do not carry in a bar or a resteraunt that makes more than 50% of it's revenue in alcohol sales. If you plan to go to a bar, my instructor suggested that you keep a case in the trunk and put the gun in it before you go inside. Applebees falls under this catagory because of their alcohol sales. It does kind of defeat the purpose if I have to run out to my car, but the idea is that more people behave stupid like when they drink. The state and federal reason has to be fear of a peaved populace. If I were them I would be worried right about now.

I was joking. And I do carry a purse.

Those little signs are dangerous because they are actually advertisments to potential shooters that the entire building is helpless and defenseless. If the leaders cared about safety of the employees, they would put up signs that say:
"Warning: Many employees conceal and carry on these premises. Employees are encouraged to use whatever protective measures they deem needed. Start trouble at your own peril."

The Texas state house has more CCW permits than any other state. Legislators grew tired of having to wait in line with tourists to have the metal detector scan them. They learned if you had a CCW you could go through the CCW (fast) entrance. Don't mess with Texas.
