Two arrested in JC drug bust

At about 8:11 P.M. Tuesday night, the Jefferson City Police Department K9 Unit conducted a traffic stop for a routine traffic violation near the intersection of West Fillmore and Washington Streets.

During the course of the stop, the K9 officer developed information leading him to suspect there was possible narcotics activity taking place, and the suspect gave consent to search the vehicle.

The K9 dog, “Buzz”, alerted on the vehicle at which time a search of the vehicle and the passengers took place.

The driver of the vehicle, a 45 year old male Jefferson City resident, was found with drug paraphernalia, a plastic bag containing methamphetamine, and a quantity of unknown pills.

The passenger, a 43 year old female Jefferson City resident, was found with needles and other paraphernalia commonly associated with the use of illegal narcotics.

A further search of the vehicle resulted in finding a water bottle that was currently in use as an active methamphetamine production, or “cooking”, device.

Both suspects were arrested for manufacturing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, and the male suspect was also arrested for possession of methamphetamine.

Names of the individuals were not released pending the filing of formal charges.

If a person's brain isn't too fried on bathtub battery acid, she should take a few minutes to know (and remember) her rights.

You have the right to refuse an officer's request to search your body and property. The officer may have the legal authority to search anyway, or not. If the officer searches over your consent, you have the right to challenge the legal validity of the search later in court. If you consent, your right to challenge the search is lost.

In practical terms, if you're arousing enough suspicion for a properly trained officer to seek a search for narcotics, then you're already in trouble on a number of levels, legal and otherwise.

Meth in particular is so debilitating that the physical and mental effects are painfully obvious. A properly trained officer will usually have no trouble identifying enough evidence to justify the government intrusion into a meth head's car.
