Lawmakers asked to change initiative petition process

Missourians might find it harder to launch an initiative petition campaign in the future, if lawmakers approve proposals now being considered in the General Assembly.

State Sen. Scott Rupp, R-Wentzville - who is one of three Republicans running for secretary of state in the Aug. 7 primary election - told members of the Senate's Financial & Governmental Organizations and Elections Committee that his bill would require the secretary's office to post the language of any proposed petition on its website "within a day or two" after the proposal is submitted to the secretary's office.

"People can see who filed it and what the gist of it is," Rupp explained Monday afternoon.

But Ron Berry, the secretary of state's lobbyist, told senators: "We do put it online - once it's been certified" for circulation.
