The 71st session of the American Legion Auxiliary's Missouri Girls State begins today on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Approximately 750 girls from across the state are attending the week-long event, which is staffed by 90 volunteer American Legion Auxiliary members.
Girls in their junior year of high school submit essays, from which the best are chosen and interviewed. Selections are based on leadership, scholastic ability, character, honesty and involvement in school and community activities.
Two girls are selected from those attending Girls State to attend Girls Nation in Washington, D.C.
The following local students were selected to Girls State:
