FORT LEONARD WOOD (AP) - Officials with Army and the Missouri National Guard are investigating two separate accidents that occurred the same day at Fort Leonard Wood, leaving one person dead and six others injured.
The fort said Thursday that Louis Stallings, 45, of Atoka, Okla., was killed and three people were injured Wednesday while doing maintenance work on a railroad spur on Fort Leonard Wood. The fort said Stallings was a railroad maintenance vehicle operator for McAlester Army Ammunition Plant in McAlester, Okla.
The fort, located in central Missouri, did not release the identities of the injured workers but said all those involved were civilians working for the Army. Two of the injured were in stable condition Thursday at a Springfield hospital. The third person suffered minor injuries and was taken for observation to a Rolla hospital.
The fort said the Army's Criminal Investigative Command is investigating the incident and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is conducting a safety investigation.
Also Wednesday, three Missouri National Guard soldiers from the Guard's Kansas City-based 135th Signal Company were hospitalized after being shocked while working with a tactical antenna system during a training exercise at the base.
Missouri National Guard spokeswoman Maj. Tammy Spicer said the three soldiers were hospitalized with injuries that are serious but not considered life-threatening. She said one soldier was hospitalized in Fort Leonard Wood and the other two were in Springfield. Their names have not been released.
The cause of the accident was under investigation, and the guard "will be re-emphasizing the already established safety procedures," Spicer said Thursday.
"We are not trying to guess what happened," she said. "We will let an investigative team look at this closely."
