Columbia man gets probation for second offense in Cole County
Tuesday, June 5, 2012
A Columbia man who was convicted of first-degree robbery in Cole County in 1996 was placed on five years supervised probation for pleading guilty to charges in connection with an attempted break-in that occurred in March in Jefferson City.
Matthew Ornt, 33, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest.
Jefferson City police said Ornt attempted to gain entry into a residence in the 100 block of East Atchison Street through a side window. A female resident confronted Ornt while he was attempting to get inside, just before she contacted law enforcement.
Ornt fled the scene on foot and did not stop after being ordered to do so by officers. He was caught in the 900 block of Monroe Street.
During the pursuit, Ornt tossed a backpack on the ground. Inside, officers found .45-caliber ammunition. They later found a .45-caliber pistol along the path of the foot pursuit.

Am I reading this right? In 1996, he's convicted of 1st degree robbery - which means at a minimum he displayed a deadly weapon. Case.net says he got 10 years. (Looks like he originally got probation then too and messed up by becoming a drug dealer which is what sent him away for 5 years concurrent.) Now he tried to break in to a home, with a firearm, and he get's probation? That makes no sense whatsoever. He's got a ton of other charges between 1996 and now too.
