CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Danny Bethea hit a walk-off three-run homer to help St. John's stun North Carolina 5-4 on Saturday night in the Chapel Hill Regional of the NCAA tournament.
Bethea's shot sent Red Storm players spilling onto the field to celebrate at home plate. St. John's (39-21) can reach the NCAA tournament's super regionals with a win Sunday night.
North Carolina (45-15), the No. 6 national seed, appeared on its way to its 17th straight win as a regional host thanks to a two-run homer from Shell McCain and a strong performance from starter Kent Emanuel. But Jeremy Baltz had a leadoff double against reliever Michael Morin (6-4) in the ninth, then Sean O'Hare reached on an infield hit to set up Bethea's homer.
Emanuel allowed five hits and two runs in eight innings for the Tar Heels, the top seed in the Chapel Hill Regional. St. John's starter Sean Hagan allowed eight hits and four runs in 8 1/3 innings.
EAST CAROLINA 10, CORNELL 6
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Tyler Joyner allowed one hit in nearly five innings of relief to help East Carolina beat Cornell in an elimination game.
Jay Cannon drove in two runs to lead the second-seeded Pirates (36-23-1), who pushed ahead for good with a five-run fifth inning then added three more runs in the seventh to get some cushion. Joyner (6-2) came on in the fifth for starter Kevin Brandt and finished with three strikeouts in 4 2-3 innings.
Brian McAfee (6-1) took the loss, allowing eight hits and six runs in 4 2-3 innings for the Big Red (31-17-1), who made their second NCAA appearance and first since 1977.
COLUMBIA REGIONAL
SOUTH CAROLINA 5, CLEMSON 4
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - LB Dantzler's single to right drove in the winning run in the 12th innings as two-time defending College World Series champion South Carolina won its 18th straight NCAA tournament game.
The Gamecocks (42-17) trailed 4-2 entering their half of the eighth, but tied things on Christian Walker's double to left and Joey Pankake's ninth-inning single. Center fielder Thomas Brittle's throw temporarily saved the game when he caught Chase Vergason scrambling to tag home.
Pankake got the winning rally going with a leadoff single in the 12th, then moved to third on Evan Marzilli's hit. That's when Dantzler smacked the ball over right fielder Brad Felder's head to easily bring home Pankake.
The Gamecocks need one more win to advance to the super regionals. Clemson (34-27) must win three games.
COASTAL CAROLINA 11, MANHATTAN 1
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Tyler Herb pitched a two-hitter and Jacob May hit a three-run homer as Coastal Carolina knocked Manhattan out of the NCAA tournament.
May led off the sixth with a single and scored the tiebreaking run that put Coastal (42-18) ahead for good. May broke things open an inning later with his three-run shot to right for his second homer of the season.
The Jaspers (33-27) lost two straight in a regional for the second straight year. Herb (9-2) never gave Manhattan a chance, allowing just a second-inning double to Joe McClennan through the first eight innings.
CORAL GABLES REGIONAL
MISSOURI STATE 12, MIAMI 2
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Kennen Maddox drove in four runs to lead Missouri State over Miami in an elimination game.
Miami finished 36-23 and failed to win a tournament game for the first since going 0-2 in the 1993 South Regional at Baton Rouge, La. In the two losses this year, the Hurricanes were outscored 22-4. Miami had won 13 straight regional championships when serving as the host.
Missouri State (40-21) scored seven runs in the first inning sending 11 batters to the plate off Steven Ewing (6-3), who lasted just two-thirds of an inning.
Pierce Johnson (4-6) struck out seven in eight innings for the Bears.
UCF 9, STONY BROOK 8
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Darnell Sweeney and Jeramy Matos each hit three-run homers to power UCF past Stony Brook.
Stony Brook (47-12), which snapped a 12-game winning streak, will face Missouri State in an elimination game on Sunday. The Seawolves scored three runs in the eighth, but their rally came up short as Joe Rogers pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his 13th save.
UCF (45-15) has won both of its games and can win the regional with a win over the Stony Brook-Missouri State winner.
Chris Matulis (7-0) allowed four runs in five relief innings for the win. Brandon McNitt (8-3) gave up eight runs - six earned - in six innings.
Travis Jankowski homered and drove in five runs for Stony Brook.
COLLEGE STATION REGIONAL
TCU 28, DAYTON 12
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - TCU scored 22 runs over the last four innings to stay alive in the NCAA tournament and eliminate Dayton with a victory in the College Station Regional.
Dayton led 9-6 going into the sixth before TCU (37-20) scored seven in the top half of that inning to grab a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Brance Rivera had six RBIs, while Jerrick Suiter had five hits. Justin Scharf (3-2) earned the victory by tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
It was the most runs scored by the Horned Frogs since a 30-2 victory over Louisville in 2003.
The Flyers (31-30) were playing in their first NCAA tournament.
MISSISSIPPI 6, TEXAS A&M 3
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Mike Mayers pitched solid ball into the seventh inning and Mississippi defeated Texas A&M.
Mayers (6-3) limited the Aggies to three runs - two earned - and four hits, and struck out a career-high nine in 6 1/3 innings. Rebels reliever Brett Huber kept the Aggies to a lone hit over the next two innings, and R.J. Hively closed it out by retiring the final two batters with two runners on.
Mississippi (37-24) scored two runs each in the third, fourth and sixth innings against A&M starter Ross Stripling (10-4), who took the loss for the Aggies (43-17) after allowing six runs - five earned - over 7 2/3 innings.
CHARLOTTESVILLE REGIONAL
APPALACHIAN STATE 5, OKLAHOMA 4
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Ryan Arrowood baffled Oklahoma on two hits for 7 2/3 innings and Appalachian State held off a rally by the Sooners in the ninth to win in the Mountaineers' first NCAA tournament appearance in 26 years.
Arrowood (11-0) had a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings before Max White's single to center. He allowed one run, struck out nine and walked three. Closer Nathan Hyatt escaped a jam in the eighth, but he and Ryne Frankoff struggled to finish it in the ninth for Appalachian State (40-16).
Jordan John (8-7) worked into the ninth for Oklahoma (38-23), but made two of the Sooners' four errors.
VIRGINIA 9, ARMY 1
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Branden Cogswell drove in four runs, Branden Kline pitched 5 2-3 strong innings and Virginia beat Army in the completion of the opener at the Charlottesville Regional.
Kline (7-3) pitched an inning Friday before the game was suspended because of rain. He allowed six hits and one earned run over the two days.
Army ace Chris Rowley (11-1) also came back after throwing eight pitches on Friday, and labored. He walked five, hit four and allowed five hits, the last Cogswell's three-run double in the sixth that made it 6-1.
RALEIGH REGIONAL
UNC WILMINGTON 13, SACRED HEART 4
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Drew Farber homered and drove in five runs, and Travis Bradley pitched into the seventh inning to help UNC Wilmington beat Sacred Heart in an elimination game in the Raleigh Regional.
Farber had four hits, including his three-run homer in the eighth for the third-seeded Seahawks (39-22). That was one of five home runs for UNC Wilmington, including back-to-back shots from Tyler Molinaro and Andrew Cain in the fourth.
Bradley (1-1) earned the win, allowing seven hits and four runs in 6 2-3 innings.
Nick Leiningen (6-6) took the loss, allowing nine hits and six runs in four innings for the Pioneers (25-32).
VANDERBILT 9, NORTH CAROLINA STATE 8
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Tony Kemp had a walk-off RBI single to help Vanderbilt beat North Carolina State.
The second-seeded Commodores (35-26) trailed 6-1 and 8-3 before scoring six runs in the final two innings to stun the top-seeded and host Wolfpack (40-18).
N.C. State appeared in control after Ryan Mathews' two-run homer in the eighth, but Vanderbilt scored five in the bottom of the inning to tie it. Then Kemp singled to center field against reliever Chris Overman to score Connor Castellano from third base in the ninth.
N.C. State starter Carlos Rodon allowed five hits and three runs in 6 2-3 innings, while Vanderbilt starter Sam Selman allowed six hits and four runs in 5 1-3 innings.
TALLAHASSEE REGIONAL
FLORIDA STATE 8, SAMFORD 1
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Brandon Leibrandt pitched eight scoreless innings and James Ramsey hit a grand slam as Florida State defeated Samford.
Leibrandt (11-2) scattered three singles, just one after the first inning, against Samford (40-22). The freshman left-hander, whose father is former big league pitcher Charlie Leibrandt, fanned a career-high 10 batters before leaving after throwing 110 pitches.
Ramsey, the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, hit his first grand slam in the seventh inning off Samford's Joseph Burns, who relieved Josh Martin (12-2) to face Ramsey.
Sherman Johnson scored three times and also homered for Florida State (45-15).
MISSISSIPPI STATE 8, UAB 1
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Wes Rea and Sam Frost each hit two-run doubles and Southeastern Conference champion Mississippi State eliminated UAB.
Rea's double into the left-field corner ignited a five-run sixth that catapulted the Bulldogs (40-23) into a 7-1 lead. Frost, whose fourth-inning double gave Mississippi State a 2-0 lead, added his third RBI in the sixth with a sacrifice fly.
Ross Mitchell (3-0) picked up the victory after replacing starter Kendall Graveman in the fourth. Caleb Reed went the final 4 2/3 innings to register his ninth save.
Ryan Nance (4-4) was tagged with the loss for the Blazers (32-20).
GAINESVILLE REGIONAL
FLORIDA 6, GEORGIA TECH 2
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Mike Zunino and Preston Tucker homered, and top-seeded Florida beat Georgia Tech in the Gainesville Regional.
Zunino's solo shot in the fourth sparked a three-run inning for Florida (44-18) that was key in a testy game. Tucker added a towering, two-run shot in the ninth.
The game had plenty of drama. Umpires reversed a strikeout call at the end of the third inning, sending Georgia Tech (37-25) back to the dugout and Florida back on the field. Tech's Jake Davies eventually struck out, making the call moot, but he tipped his hat to Florida fans booing him. Zunino, who was involved in the disputed call, homered to open the fourth.
Georgia Tech coach Danny Hall was ejected in the fifth while arguing an aggressive slide at second base. In the seventh, Tech catcher Zane Evans yelled at Florida shortstop Nolan Fontana following a play at the plate. Fontana kicked Evans' facemask after getting thrown out trying to score.
COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON 8, BETHUNE-COOKMAN 2
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Matt Pegler pitched a two-hitter, Daniel Aldrich homered and College of Charleston eliminated Bethune-Cookman.
Pegler (10-2) pitched his first complete game and struck out a career-high nine, and Aldrich also hit an RBI double and single for the Cougars (38-21).
The Wildcats (34-27) went 14 1-3 innings before getting their first hit in the NCAA tournament. They were no-hit by Florida's Jonathon Crawford on Friday and went five-plus innings Saturday before Carlos Delgado's grounder up the middle ricocheted off the second-base bag for a single. Josh Johnson followed with a two-run homer.
HOUSTON REGIONAL
ARKANSAS 1, RICE 0
HOUSTON (AP) - Ryne Stanek and Barrett Astin combined on a six-hitter to lead Arkansas over Rice.
Stanek (7-4) threw seven scoreless innings, giving up five hits and striking out five. Astin gave up a hit over the final two innings for his seventh save.
Austin Kubitza (6-5) allowed an unearned on two hits with eight strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings for Rice (41-18).
Arkansas (41-19) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Dominic Ficociello scored from second after Shane Hoelscher couldn't handle Derrick Bleeker's hot shot at third base. Hoelscher was charged with an error.
SAM HOUSTON STATE 4, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 2
HOUSTON (AP) - Sam Houston State capitalized on two errors by Prairie View A&M during a three-run fifth inning and held on for a win in an elimination game in the Houston Regional.
Justin Jackson (9-4) allowed two runs - no earned- on eight hits with two strikeouts in eight-plus innings for Sam Houston State (39-21). Michael Burchett worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the ninth without giving up a run for his ninth save.
Stef Hernandez (6-4) gave up four runs - two earned- on six hits in 8 1-3 innings for Prairie View (28-25).
GARY REGIONAL
KENT STATE 7, PURDUE 3
GARY, Ind. (AP) - Ryan Bores scattered nine hits in his first career complete game, and Jimmy Rider drove in three runs as Kent State beat Purdue and extended its winning streak to 19.
The Golden Flashes (43-17), who have the nation's longest active streak, will play in a NCAA regional final for the second consecutive year.
Bores (9-2) saved a pitching staff that worked through 21 innings in a 7-6 victory over Kentucky on Friday night. Rider - the career hits leader for Kent State and Mid-American Conference - had three more to give him 349.
Lance Breedlove (8-6), the Big Ten pitcher of the year, couldn't make it out of the second inning for the Boilermakers (45-13).
KENTUCKY 8, VALPARAISO 1
GARY, Ind. (AP) - Austin Cousino had three hits and drove in three runs as Kentucky survived elimination with a victory over Valparaiso.
The Wildcats (44-17) scored six of their runs with two outs, including a five-run sixth inning which broke open the game. Kentucky starter Jerad Grundy (6-3) threw six strong innings to help save a pitching staff that was depleted by Friday night's 21-inning 7-6 loss to Kent State. Chandler Shepherd pitched the final three innings in relief to earn his first save.
Andrew Bain had three hits to lead the Crusaders (35-25), who were knocked out of their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1968.
BATON ROUGE REGIONAL
LSU 7, OREGON STATE 1
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - LSU ace Kevin Gausman allowed one run and no extra-base hits through eight innings, and the Tigers defeated Oregon State.
Gausman (11-1) threw a season-high 129 pitches - 62 through the first three innings. He yielded seven hits and struck out three.
Austin Nola went 2 for 4 with an RBI single in LSU's two-run second and an RBI triple in the eighth. Ty Ross and Grant Dozar each had two hits and an RBI for LSU (45-16).
Beavers starter Dan Child (6-4) lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits for the Beavers (39-19). Ryan Dunn drove in the Beavers' lone run in the third inning.
LOUISIANA-MONROE 6, BELMONT 3
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Jeremy Sy had three hits, scored a run and drove home two more with a single in the eighth inning, and Louisiana-Monroe stayed alive in the NCAA tournament with a victory over Belmont.
Sy scored the game's first run after his triple to right field in the third inning. He later added a double. Judd Edwards also had three hits for ULM (32-29), leading off the eighth with a double and scoring the eventual winning run on Les Aulds' soft groundout to third.
Kendall Thamm (7-3) pitched the final 4 2-3 innings for the win, while Belmont reliever Scott Moses (2-3) took the loss. Belmont (39-24), the Atlantic Sun Conference champion, which was eliminated.
WACO REGIONAL
DALLAS BAPTIST 11, ORAL ROBERTS 8
WACO, Texas (AP) - Duncan McAlpine homered and drove in five runs as Dallas Baptist got past Oral Roberts in the Waco Regional.
Dallas Baptist (41-17) banged out 12 hits off three Oral Roberts (38-24) pitchers in the first five innings to take what seemed like a commanding 10-3 lead.
The Golden Eagles made it interesting, scoring three in the third off DBU starter Mike Torrence and adding three more in the fifth before Aaron Gilbreath (4-3) threw 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief. Oral Roberts brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but closer Stuart Prudenz struck out Bennett Pickar to end the game.
BAYLOR 11, TEXAS-ARLINGTON 6
WACO, Texas (AP) - Josh Ludy went 4 for 4 with a two-run homer and closer Max Garner bailed out Baylor's bullpen with three shutout innings as the Bears rallied for a win over Texas-Arlington to avoid elimination.
The Bears (45-15), who had their nation-leading 22-game home winning streak snapped Friday night in a 4-2 loss to Oral Roberts, broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the seventh against reliever Adam Boydston (2-4).
Garner (3-2) came on in the sixth and pitched three hitless innings before tiring in the ninth.
UTA (36-25) was making its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2006.
STANFORD REGIONAL
STANFORD 5, PEPPERDINE 4
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Kenny Diekroeger doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, helping Stanford rally past Pepperdine.
Brian Ragira had two hits, including a home run, and scored twice for the Cardinal (40-16), who won for the 11th time in 13 games and advanced to the regional championship.
Bryan Langlois had three hits and drove in two runs for the Waves (36-22), who grabbed a 4-0 lead in the third against Brett Mooneyham, who lasted 2 1/3 innings.
A.J. Vanegas (4-0) went the final 3 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Scott Frazier (7-5) took the loss.
FRESNO STATE 8, MICHIGAN STATE 2
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Trent Garrison had three hits and drove in three runs to help Fresno State top Michigan State in an elimination game at the Stanford Regional.
The Spartans recorded a triple play in the top of the eighth inning. The Bulldogs had runners on first and second when Ken Wise drilled a ball into the right-center field gap. Anthony Cheky stretched out to make a diving catch and returned the ball to first baseman Ryan Krill in plenty of time to double off both runners, which included a toss to shortstop Justin Scanlon.
Gene Escat (4-0) pitched 2 1-3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory, and Taylor Garrison recorded seven outs for his 11th save.
Andy Waszak (4-4) allowed four runs in seven innings for the Spartans, who played in their first NCAA tournament in 33 years.
EUGENE REGIONAL
OREGON 7, CAL STATE FULLERTON 5
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Alex Keudell became Oregon's career leader in wins, pitching the Ducks past Cal State Fullerton.
Keudell (11-4), the Pac-12 pitcher of the year, allowed five runs on four hits in seven innings to earn the 23rd win of his Oregon career. Jimmie Sherfy threw two scoreless innings of relief, getting Fullerton's Richy Pedroza looking at a called third strike for his 18th save.
Oregon (44-17), the No. 5 national seed, needs one win to move on to the super regionals.
Kyle Garlick's two-run triple highlighted a four-run first inning for the Ducks, who built a 6-0 lead against Big West pitcher of the year Dylan Floro (10-4).
Michael Lorenzen hit a towering, three-run homer that cut the deficit for the Titans (36-20) to 6-5 in the fifth.
AUSTIN PEAY 1, INDIANA STATE 0
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Andy Cox pitched seven shutout innings and Austin Peay eliminated Indiana State from the NCAA tournament.
The Governors scored the only run in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded single by Rolando Gautier.
Indiana State's best chance to score came in the fourth when Ryan Walterhouse was robbed of a home run by Austin Peay center fielder Michael Blanchard, who reached over the fence for the catch.
Cox (6-1) gave up just three hits, walked three and struck out two for the Governors (39-23). Tyler Rogers got two outs for his 12th save.
Sean Manaea (5-3) took the loss for the Sycamores (41-19), who were in their first NCAA tournament since 1995.
LOS ANGELES REGIONAL
UCLA 7, NEW MEXICO 1
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Nick Vander Tuig took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and UCLA snapped New Mexico's 10-game winning streak.
Vander Tuig (9-3) struck out a career-high 11 and lost his no-hit bid when Trey Porras led off the eighth with a double. He allowed an unearned run in the fifth as the Bruins (44-14) won their sixth straight and 13th in 14 games.
The Lobos (37-23) entered the tournament with a team batting average of .333, but were held to its lowest hits total - two - of the season while UCLA pounded out 17 hits. Gera Sanchez (8-3) took the loss.
CREIGHTON 8, SAN DIEGO 2
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Shane Liska held San Diego to one run over five innings and Anthony Bemboom had three RBIs as Creighton defeated the Toreros in an elimination game.
Chase Webb, Mark Winkelman and Kurt Spomer held San Diego to one run in relief of Liska (3-4) over the final four innings for the Bluejays (27-29).
Bemboom's RBI single in the fourth and two-run single in the fifth gave the Bluejays an 8-1 lead after five innings. Nick Judkins had three hits and an RBI for Creighton.
Paul Sewald (8-4) took the loss for San Diego. After finishing the regular season with the third-most wins in school history, the Toreros (40-17) lost both games in the regional and scored only two runs.
TUCSON REGIONAL
ARIZONA 16, LOUISVILLE 4
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Alex Mejia went 5 for 5 with three RBIs and four runs scored as Arizona's offense kept humming along, using 23 hits to rout Louisville in the Tucson Regional.
A night after the Wildcats (40-17) had 20 hits in a 15-3 drubbing of Missouri, Arizona dominated by using a five-run third inning and a seven-run seventh to put the game out of reach.
Seth Mejias-Brean went 4 for 6 with two RBIs, and Brandon Dixon homered for Arizona. Konner Wade (8-3) allowed four runs - two earned - and 10 hits in eight innings.
Louisville starter Jared Ruxer (8-3) was roughed up for five runs and seven hits in just 2 1/3 innings. The Cardinals (40-21) briefly led 1-0 on Stewart Ijames' RBI single in the first.
MISSOURI 6, NEW MEXICO STATE 2
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Missouri scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally past New Mexico State in an elimination game in the Tucson Regional.
Trailing 2-1 in the eighth, Conner Mach hit a one-out double and scored the tying run on Dane Opel's single down the right-field line. Michael McGraw tripled to drive in the go-ahead run, and after a walk to Andreas Plackis, Scott Sommerfield hit a two-run triple to make it 5-2 for Missouri (35-24).
Eric Garcia capped the scoring against the Aggies (33-27) one out later with an RBI single.
Jeff Emens (4-1) pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the win.
