MoDOT: Keep road signs off right-of-way
Tuesday, July 17, 2012
Missouri’s primary election is just three weeks from today.
And the state Transportation department already has reminded Missourians to keep their political signs off highway rights-of-way.
“They can be a distraction to drivers,” spokesman Robert Brendel said. “They can restrict the visibility of drivers to see across roads — (like) somebody pulling out — (or) to see an informational sign that they need to see.
“(And) they get in the way of our roadside operations and, if they’re a problem to our maintenance workers, then they will take them down.”
Brendel noted that placing signs along the highway right-of-way violates a 1929 state law giving the highway commission to authority to regulate advertising and signs on the right-of-way of state highways. Violation of the law is a misdemeanor.
A department flier about the law says: “MoDOT staff will remove these items wherever they are found.”
