JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - An attorney for a western Missouri woman asked the state Supreme Court to block the implementation of new state Senate districts.
The districts for the Missouri Senate were redrawn by a panel of state appellate judges to reflect population changes from the 2010 census. The redistricting commission submitted its first map Nov. 30 and filed a revised map Dec. 9.
The legal challenge argued Thursday contends the redistricting panel could not submit its second map because it finished its work with the first map. The suit asserts the first map violates the Missouri Constitution by unnecessarily splitting counties among multiple districts.
The Missouri attorney general's office contends nothing prohibits the redistricting commission from revising a map. The state argues the second redistricting proposal is constitutional.
