Your Opinion: Oppose 'bailout' for Ameren site

Dear Editor:

I sincerely hope citizens and the Legislature wake up to Ameren's plan of having us bail them out. I am referring to HB1316, which will bail out Ameren with $115 million in rate-payers money. Ameren claims they need this money to obtain a permit for a second nuclear plant.

The truth is Ameren doesn't need HB1316 to get an early site permit; it can already get the permit. Ameren needs HB1316 to have Missouri businesses and residents pay for it, because they refuse to use their own money.

HB1316 doesn't create any jobs and does nothing to actually build a new electric plant. In fact, Ameren will not commit to building another nuclear plant and has no way to pay for a $12 billion new nuclear plant, which makes a bailout even more unfair.

Ameren has paid out over $2.2 billion to shareholders over the past 5 years, yet they want ratepayers to bail them out for $115 million. I can't afford another Ameren rate increase.

I know the Legislature would never consider raising taxes in this tough economy and raising energy rates to bail out Ameren, a publicly traded electric company should be off the table as well.

Ameren has raised rates 36 percent over the past four years for a total of $810 million, enough is enough, please urge legislators to vote against bailing out Ameren.
