Your Opinion: Continue tradition of investing in future

Dear Editor:

As one of many business owners in our community, my faith in the future of Jefferson City has kept me investing locally in equipment, inventory and personnel. Just look around at other local businesses that are currently investing in Jefferson City - even during a down economy. From restaurants, to health care institutions, car dealerships, manufacturers, utility companies even national stores, companies big and small are taking huge risks with money they could be saving. They too, believe in their futures in Jefferson City.

We have had opportunities in past years to make some decisions that would have helped our town grow, possibly make it a destination. We chose to pass them up. Is there ever an ideal time for a tax increase? We cannot keep passing up opportunities to invest in our future, in our children's and grandchildren's future. I keep saying "we need to invest in Jefferson City." What if those in our history had not taken a gamble on Jefferson City and fought to keep the state capital here? What if every local business owner, all the way back through our city's history had not taken a gamble to invest here?

Those with vision, past and present, took huge risks to make Jefferson City the great community it is today. We owe it to them, and to ourselves and to future generations to not wait for someone else to take the gamble. Not to be satisfied with the status quo. Not to wait, and keep waiting, for a better economic climate.

We need to say that we are proud of this community and we want to keep making it better!
