Dear Editor:
Many of us in the Jefferson City area community are graduates of or attended Lincoln University.
As I became more involved in the Transformation process and the upcoming election, I was very impressed to see the amount of involvement Lincoln had in the decisions and the benefits the university and the community will receive. For too long and for whatever reason, Lincoln has been a hidden asset in our region. It appears that is all about to change.
Access to higher education is something all should want. If Lincoln is allowed to increase campus size, have nice affordable housing nearby and have a very visible footprint in the St. Mary's buildings it will be good for all of us.
More students mean more young people. More young people means more spending in the community. More young people pursuing degrees means a deeper talent pool for local employers, including health care and state government. Electronic Medical Records is a burgeoning field in the health care arena, and currently with very limited educational resources.
More educated young people will also provide a spark to the community as they seek opportunities to get involved with Jefferson City activities and organizations. Heaven knows we need more people involved that represent all of the faces of our residents.
I will be supporting the sales tax question on the Feb. 7 ballot and look forward to the day when Lincoln University is recognized as an integral component of our city, promoting the best place to live, work, and raise our families.
