Gun, ammo sales up in Callaway County

A Reuters analysis of U.S. government data on background checks run on prospective gunbuyers in the past 13 years has shown that statistically, firearm sales tend to boom following mass shootings.

According to firearm dealers in Fulton, Callaway County is no exception. Gun and ammo sales have increased significantly in the past few weeks, following prominent shootings such as Sandy Hooks Elementary School and the recent incident where firefighters were shot in New York state.

Carl Adams, owner of Briggs Gun Shop on Business 54 South, said he has seen gun sales go up by about 21 guns per week since the shootings, most of them handguns. He said he doesn’t have a single AR-model handgun left in stock.

Psst, Dean 'ol buddy - an AR is not a handgun.

Just thought you might need to know for your next (I'm sure very highly educated, LOL) story on guns.

I wonder how many "AR-model handguns" he originally had in stock?

In the US over 300,000 crimes, using guns, are comitted annually. The feds convict less than 5,000 people of 922(g) crimes a year. (For those who don't know, 922(g) prohibits felons, drug users, illegal aliens, wife beaters, etc, from legally having a gun) Are we supposed to beleive that less than 2% of gun related crimes are comitted by illegals, drug users and felons?

For the norhern Illinois district, which includes Chicago, there were only 25 federal weapons prosecutions during the first 4 months of 2011 (the lates stats I could find).

I have to wonder why the federal government refuses to enforce 922(g). Is it just not that important to them?

So you can shoot in your backyard and harrass your neighbors.

Yep, and in JC you can own up to 6 dogs and keep them in your backyard barking 24/7 to "harrass your neighbors".
Sec. 5-32. Maximum number animals. A. No occupant of any residential building or unit of a residential building shall allow more than six (6) dogs or cats, or combination of dogs and cats, to be kept within the residential building or unit without a permit.
What was your point again?

Mia, when I was out this morning between 6:30 and 7:30 and I heard shots from the neighbors place -- twice. I believe they were deer hunting and hope they were successful. I sight my guns in in my back yard. All our neighbors have guns and hearing shots is common. About the only time we pay attention is to shots near dark or after dark, indicating poachers or something else illegal. If you live in a rural area, don't be surprised to hear gunshots sometimes. As long as the shooters are doing it safely and are not trespassing, the noise should not be a problem. If they are not being safe, law enforcement should be called and they should take care of the problem. Reckless use of a firearm is illegal, regardless of where you are.

A few questioned the existence of AR "handguns." (One of those comments was posted, probably accidentally, via the blog button so it's divorced from this story.) Judging by Internet search results, it is more often dubbed a pistol. Looks basically like it's the same guts as the rifle only with a shorter barrel. I found this video with a side-by-side comparison: youtube.com/watch?v=sCLEJt_Nmwc

Yes, there are AR 'pistols', the main attributes being a shorter barrel and no buttstock, only a padded recoil tube. But I would suggest your reporter did not mean it that way, he was just repeating words on a subject it appears he knows little to nothing about.

Lets continue the subject though - maybe some folks will start to understand the workings of these evil gun 'machines' that have been rising up by themselves and killing people lately :-)
