Mo. state senator wants tougher safety belt law

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A Missouri state senator wants a tougher law for safety belt violators.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/Z5WG7B ) reports that Democratic Sen. Joseph Keaveny of St. Louis plans to introduce legislation in the upcoming session raising the fine for failure to buckle up. The current fine is $10. Keaveny notes that the fine for littering is $79.50.

Keaveny says many traffic deaths in Missouri result not from the initial impact, but from people being thrown from vehicles. And many of those who are ejected are children.

I agree seat belts save lives but what I don't like and have never liked is someone telling me what I have to do in my vehicle. I pay the insurance. I make the car payments. I pay the fricken taxes every year which is another thorn in my side and I just don't agree with anyone saying I HAVE to wear a seat belt or get fined. It should be my decision if I wear it or not. It should be my choice if I choose to fly through the windshield should an accident occur. I always buckle up but I don't like it.

You pay your insurance and taxes; fine. But it's not just about you or your fiscal responsibilities. What about the dollars of other taxpayers who end up footing some of the costs of traffic fatalities? And believe me, it's a lot. According to the Centers for Disease Control, taxpayers in the state of California get hit for more than $4 billion a year due to costs incurred by car crash fatalities.

Of course, it's the CDC; which is a government entity, so I'm sure there are those who will feel that the information is part of some rigged conspiracy, masterminded by Obama.

I wear my seat belt. My complaint is having my freedom of choice taken away from me. I may be wrong but I believe I read something about TARP and taxpayers and that taxpayers were refunded costs or came out ahead. Like I said I could be wrong and there was also something about the govt. and bailouts so anyone who can figure out the mess I just pulled out of my head please let me know because I only remember bits and pieces.

No conspiracy, just personal responsibility. Name one law or a fine that's stopped behavior completely. This isn't about our well being, it's about more money for the coffers. While were at it, why don't we come up with a serious law that puts extreme fines on people that drive blind folded (texting). How much are you willing to give up for people that don't want to help themselves? It always boils down to liberty and our "representatives" keep whittling away at it one sliver at a time. If you see my point of view as a conspiracy then you don't get it and probably never will.

You don't like to be safe and protect your life? Seat belts are no big deal. Just use them.

The only ones who should be forced to buckle up are children, the rest are old enough to make that decision.
