Police investigating reported threat against Akin

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Capitol Police said Thursday that officers are investigating a reported threat against Rep. Todd Akin, the Missouri congressman who has been criticized for comments he recently made about rape.

Police spokeswoman Lt. Kimberly Schneider said there was "an active, open investigation" into a reported threat against the Republican, though she declined to detail the threat because it involved security of members of Congress.

The six-term congressman, who is running for the U.S. Senate, created a firestorm when he said in a television interview Sunday that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancies in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." He has repeatedly apologized, saying he misspoke, and has refused demands by top Republicans to withdraw from the Senate race.

Several threats have been made against the congressman, his family and staff since the interview aired, Akin spokesman Steve Taylor said. Taylor said threats of rape and other violence have been aimed at Akin through phone calls, emails and tweets.

Akin is challenging incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Theres more info at connect mid mo. I am still upset by Akins comments but to threaten him, his staff and family with rape and or death isn't right. He blew his bid for the U.S. senate, he made himself look like a schmuck to a lot of people and maybe his political career is over.Note that I said maybe because I don't know. Personally speaking I felt like kicking his butt but The threats are awful .

Hmmm. Powerless people threatening a powerful politician with physical violence is a "crime." A powerful politician threatening women with the prospect of back alley abortions is "politics."

Of course I can't condone actual threats of violence on anyone. But, on the other hand, guys like Akin have no problem condeming powerless, marginalized people to lives of anxiety and fear over basic needs for their own political and economic gain, while Akin can use his power and resources to insulate himself not just from fear and anxiety, but from any responsibilty to confront any fact that makes him uncomfortable, like the facts of rape, female reproduction, or the real circumstances of abortion.

I don't hope Akin gets hurt. But I hope he feels some real fear, and I hope it wakes him up.

Men like Akin sleep through the wounds they inflict upon others. A little pain might help them awaken.

It's not about agreement. It's about power. When you weild great power but don't care to know anything about how that affects people, that's the problem. It's not about whether you agree with me or not. If you're a despot, you don't have to care if anyone agrees.
