Your Opinion: Sen. McCaskill’s actions supported

Dear Editor:

I support Sen. McCaskill and believe she’s a good senator. I have had the chance to hear her speak during the health care debate and in just that short time I realized the depth she brings as a Missouri senator. I believe she really understands our state and the fact the Missourians have many points of view.

I don’t see Ms. McCaskill as reckless, far from it. I support her vote on the Affordable Care Act. As time goes by we see there are many benefits to Missourians in this law. Our family benefited by having our youngest stay on our insurance longer. I’m glad my insurance can’t deny me coverage if I get sick. I’m glad that those with pre-existing conditions will be able to get health care and Americans will get better access to screening that can save lives. What we are hearing now is the same rhetoric people used when Medicare was passed, when the GI bill was a passed, etc. Far worse, I believe, is Congress not renewing the ban on assault weapons and the damage that has ensued since.

I am glad that Sen. McCaskill voted “yes” on the cap and trade bill. At least she tried to help America move toward an energy picture that is more sustainable, far better than what we have now. There are so many in Congress that are in bed with big oil that getting a sustainable energy policy is just about impossible.

I am glad she supported the stimulus as the data shows that previous to it, the US was hemorrhaging private sector jobs and since it passed, every month’s job report since has shown positive private sector job growth. I support the repeal of DADT. It is the right thing to do. One’s sexual preference should never be a determining factor in one’s service to our country. I support the confirmation of Justices Kagan and Sotomayor to the court to help achieve balance there. Her work on behalf of our veterans is exemplary, especially that dealing with the remains at Arlington Cemetery.

Some favor extremely conservative candidates and ideas but there are others that do not. Missouri has many Democrats and Republicans and the views of both need representation in Washington. I believe Sen.McCaskill has shown she has the intelligence and heart for the job.
