Sobriety checkpoints to begin Aug. 17

The Cole County Sheriff’s Department will participate in statewide sobriety checkpoints and DWI saturation patrols Aug. 17-Sept. 3.
Authorities said impaired driving contributes to nearly 30 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities.
In 2011, 220 people were killed and 902 seriously injured in crashed involving an impaired driver.

These checkpoints should also be searching cars for cellphones to see if the driver has used them for texting in the five minutes previous to being stopped. Driving while texting causes as many accidents or more than driving while intoxicated.
