Girl rescued from waist-high Missouri mud

NEW MADRID, Mo. (AP) - An 11-year-old girl is OK after being rescued from waist-high mud near the Mississippi River in southeast Missouri.

KFVS-TV (http://bit.ly/MYo66o ) reports that the rescue happened Wednesday afternoon in New Madrid, Mo., where the girl and her family were fishing. The girl began to sink in mud that acted like quicksand. Soon, she was waist-deep in the mud and couldn't get out.

Firefighters and other rescuers put a rope around the girl to keep her from sinking further, then built a make-shift platform around her so they wouldn't sink while trying to save her. They were able to dig down far enough to pull the child to safety.

New Madrid firefighter Jim Russell says the drought has exposed spongy mud that is normally under water.
