House endorses teen tanning restrictions

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) — Missouri teens would need their parents’ permission to use tanning facilities under legislation endorsed by the state House.

The legislation would require annual parental consent for children younger than 17 years old to use tanning salons. The measure was approved Tuesday and needs another vote before moving to the state Senate.

Sponsoring House member Gary Cross, a Republican from Lee’s Summit, cited concerns about skin cancer risks from tanning beds.

The legislation was approved after the House backed off an effort to bar anyone younger than 15 from using tanning equipment because of some concerns about expanding government mandates.

More than 30 states have laws requiring parental consent for teens to use tanning beds and more than 10 states forbid tanning beds for teenagers of certain ages.

This is just another example of the government mandating what citizens can or cannot do, that only politicians know what's best for "we the people". It is up to the parents whether or not their child can use a tanning bed. I hope we actually have members of the House and Senate re-read the oath they took, the seem to have forgotten it.
