Secret Service calls Nugent over anti-Obama screed

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rocker and gun rights champion Ted Nugent says he will meet with the Secret Service on Thursday to explain his raucous remarks about what he called Barack Obama’s “evil, America-hating administration” — comments some critics interpreted as a threat against the president.

“The conclusion will be obvious that I threatened no one,” Nugent told radio interviewer Glenn Beck on Wednesday. Nugent said he’d been contacted by the agency and would cooperate fully even though he found the complaints “silly.”

The controversy erupted after the self-styled “Motor City Madman” made an impassioned plea for support for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney during the National Rifle Association meeting in St. Louis last weekend. “We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November,” Nugent said of the Obama administration.

He also included a cryptic pronouncement: “If Barack Obama becomes the next president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.”

Outraged Democrats circulated the remarks and suggested they were threatening. Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie confirmed the agency was looking into the matter but declined to give details. “We are aware of the incident and we are taking appropriate follow-up,” Ogilvie said.

Nugent said he was simply trying to galvanize voters. The hard rocker, best known for ’70s hits like “Cat Scratch Fever,” is a conservative activist and has a history of heated and sometimes vulgar criticism of Obama. Nugent endorsed Romney after speaking to him last month.

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz called on Romney to “condemn Nugent’s violent and hateful rhetoric.”

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul addressed the issue with a brief statement: “Divisive language is offensive no matter what side of the political aisle it comes from. Mitt Romney believes everyone needs to be civil.”

Since when is it illegal to speak against our president? Oh yeah, since his skin is a different color. Well guess what, you wanted equality and you got it. Ted doesn't have to like you and neither do I. Unless you suspended the constitution, and that wouldn't surprise me one bit, this is a freedom of speech issue.

It is not illegal to speak against the president, but it is illegal to threaten the life of our president and it doesn't matter if that president is black or white so stop making it a race issue. Nugent is nothing but a gun totting looser who shot his mouth off and now has to suffer the consequences..

Any intelligent person knows what he meant when he made that statement, you can deny it all you want but it doesn't change the fact that he did threaten the President of the United States and it doesn't matter if you love or hate the President threatening him is wrong and that is exactly what he did and I am not an Obama fan just so you know and I am not a democrat either it’s just wrong what he said and it should be taken seriously because you know damn well that if it was a black rapper who said the exact same thing about President Bush you all would be up in arms about it and don't you dare tell me you wouldn't!! Actually now that I think about it I believe a little band named the Dixie Chicks said that they were ashamed that the president (Mr. Bush) was from their state and they were bashed left and right and pretty much ran out of town and they didn't even threaten to kill the man. Pretty funny how much of a double standard things can be sometimes.

You need to read a little closer. His comment about the "Illegal and America-hating administration" is pretty common conservative bluster, but "dead or in jail" probably does not meet normal free speech requirements.

I can't imagine the Secret Service having much to worry about from Ted Nugent, but there's the issue of inflamatory reactions from some nut job with a guitar in one hand, a gun in the other, and a major spliff between the ears. My question for Redneck is just how much speaking of violence against a sitting President would be acceptable? Any limits? Somebody on FOX today said Nugent's words weren't a threat. Credible threat? No. Threat? By any definition, yes.

However, it is not as if he was in a crowded theater and yelled, "fire." My point here is not that Obama is a Black Man, or that Nugent didn't go to Vietnam. He was a peaceful protestor, like so many of you liberals. (I thought you would admire him for that). My point is that there is an inequity of justice here. Hate speech only applies to Whites when they do it. Bile and Vitriol designed to stir up any ethnic group other than white, coming from any ethnic group other than white, is allowed and often encouraged by our so called leaders. The law needs to be applied fairly and equitably, based neither on race or creed. That's what the constitution says and that is how it should be. One day, when you no longer have the freedom you have today (what little remains of it), you will think on this. I hope you see the light.

Like I said above, Nugent stood at a podium and said dumb things that were, by any reading of english, a flacid threat to do something wrong or die trying when Obama gets re-elected. A non-credible, but clear, threat. And the Secret Service has checked him out, found him hapless, and said he's guilty of nothing more dangerous than playing with himself on stage.

What he said is nothing near what the panthers have said. I want them to get a visit from the CIA. I want the voter intimidation in Florida prosecuted. I want the black on black shootings investigated and reported on. There are 50 gang related black on black shootings for every white/hispanic on black shooting, but what do we hear about? The one. Hey...I voted for Bush 1 AND 2 and I was down for Mccain until he made that nutty choice to chose Palin as his VP. I also still long to get my hands around that fella's neck who threw the shoes at then President Bush. Even though Bush did a lot of things wrong ...he was the President and I'd have laid down my life defedning him against some knuckel head who wanted to harm him.

Why you defend Ted is a wonder...but I guess you hate the black guy in the White House too. Better get use to him being there, cause he's gonna get another four years to live there. The traditional White House is a thing of ther past. Just wait until Hillary is there runnig things..what's gonna be the excuse for not supporting her? Yeah that's right after 8 years of Obama...a women is gonna step in and continue fixing things that 40 plus white men have been screwing up all these years.. I find it kinda sweet that the very people white men said had no brains are finally fixing the things that have been hinderingf this nation for all these years.
