JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - State officials around the country are looking for ways to give consumers a break from rising gas prices - including one Missouri House member who wants motorists to get advance warning of some increases.
Republican Ray Weter, of Nixa, said Tuesday that gas stations should have to notify the public 24 hours ahead of increases of 3 cents per gallon or more.
In South Carolina, a state senator wants to put caps on the wholesale price of gas.
Oil industry representatives say both ideas could result in shortages in those states - without bringing prices down.
Other state governments are looking at reducing their cut of fuel prices. Connecticut's governor signed a measure Tuesday to limit one of the state's two gas taxes.
