Lawmakers may be moving on "Jobs' bill

The 27-member state House Economic Development Committee will meet next week, to discuss a bill intended to create incentives for businesses that add jobs and are involved in international exports, Floor Leader Tim Jones, R-Eureka, told reporters Thursday morning.

By Thursday evening, the meeting details had not been posted on the House website, www.house.mo.gov, but The Associated Press reported that House Republicans plan to caucus next Wednesday about the bill, then debate and vote on it Thursday.

The moves came a day after Gov. Jay Nixon urged lawmakers "to resolve their differences and get a fiscally responsible jobs bill on my desk, or to bring this special session to a close."

Lawmakers are in the fourth week of a special session that Nixon agreed to call after House Speaker Steven Tilley, R-Perryville, and Senate President Pro Tem Rob Mayer, R-Dexter, staged a series of news conferences in July announcing they'd worked out a "deal" on a major package of bills to bring more jobs to the state.

Both House and Senate have passed part of that package - the Missouri Science and Innovation Reinvestment Act, or MOSIRA, that creates a fund to offer incentives for science-based businesses to develop or expand in Missouri.
