Driftwood Outdoors: Early autumn escape

Catching brown trout fun way to spend a day

Jackie Due takes his job seriously.

"I catch browns probably 10 to 1 compared to most of the other guides on the river," he said. "I'm known for trophy fish."

He then choked down some dark, thick syrup and pulled a hard drag from a cigarette.

Down in Arkansas, just across the Missouri line in the tiny town of Bull Shoals, it's a crisp 55 degrees. The sky is overcast, and rain could move in at any moment.

I'm standing outside the floating office of Bull Shoals Boat Dock and Marina tossing fish pellets to a massive school of carp, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my fishing guide, Due.

The White River below Bull Shoals Dam is one of the most renowned trout fisheries in the country.
