Every few years an amazing musical feat takes the stage and glorifies God in the process. Piano Praise VIII will combine the echoing sounds of five grand pianos played simultaneously by two players each for a variety of religious music.

"This is a way for us to be able to use our talent in a way to honor the Lord and in a religious setting that is not threatening," said Denise Turner, coordinator and pianist.

"Music is the language of the world, and I think people understand that."

The eighth performance in 16 years will involve more than 30 pianists from the First Baptist Church congregation, including a group of 10 children and another group of 10 people from one family.

Musical selections will range from contemporary to classical to old-fashioned favorites, Turner said.

"But all with a different twist with that many people playing," she said. The musicians have been rehearsing together weekly since July, in a classroom of five upright pianos.

"It sounds completely different when you go from little pianos to grand pianos," Turner said. Admission is free. But a love offering will be collected for Joplin tornado relief efforts.

"Anybody who likes music would enjoy it," Turner said.

Shows will be at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at First Baptist Church, 301 E. Capitol Ave. in Jefferson City.
