Adams-Capitol intersection closing this morning
Tuesday, September 13, 2011
After 8 a.m. today, Jefferson City and contractor Sam Gaines Construction will close the intersection of Adams Street and East Capitol Avenue to continue reconstruction work of the stormwater system.
The closure is expected to last for approximately four weeks and will reopen as soon as construction progress and weather permits.
Detour signs will be posted, but motorists are urged to avoid the area.

I understand the need to rebuild the sewer and storm system. I understand the need to upgrade Lafayette street. I understand the need to do random projects that pop up without warning. I understand that Jeff City's worst traffic is better than a major city's best traffic. However, I cannot fathom the lack of planning and lack of any discernable scheduling in the closing of so many streets on the east end of downtown. Several hundred people park in the East garage on Monroe street. Approximately 50% of them live east of Monroe, or come in on highway 50. As it is, you can't get to the East garage from 50 without routing everyone coming from east of town directly into the path of those coming from west, north, and south of town.
With that in mind - why doesn'f the city just close down all of East Capital and Lafayette do whatever it is they need to do and just get it over with so we can get normal traffic again?!? Quit working on one or two spots here or there that screw up a given route, shut the dang street down, get it done, and quit working on 12 projects simultaneously that all screw up the same route. At least get Lafayette open again before they close Adams, so that you can come up Capital or over by the public housing and hit McCarty without having to make 3 left turns against rush hour traffic. As of last night it took 15 minutes to come up Madison, turn left on High, get on Monroe, and turn left onto 50 (you CANNOT turn left off of Madison onto 50.) So please, just shut down what needs to be worked on, get it done, and let us have the roads back, one street at a time.
