DRIFTWOOD OUTDOORS: Happily stuck in a rut

Time for deer hunt approaching

This is what we've been waiting for: frost on windows and bucks chasing does.

For bowhunters, prime time has arrived. These two weeks leading up until the opening of firearm season are when you stick-and-string aficionados need to be in the woods as often and as long as possible.

I just returned from a weeklong bow hunt in Illinois. When my party arrived Oct. 22, mid-day temperatures were in the high 70s and there were few buck sightings. Trail camera pictures confirmed the majority of buck movement was from 11 p.m.-5 a.m.

On Oct. 26, the temperature dropped like a rock and Oct. 27 was incredible. Bucks were on the move and I had a legitimate Boone & Crockett monster at 80 yards.
