JC trash rates to increase next month

Residents and businesses should prepare for increased trash rates starting next month.

According to a news release, the city will see a 4.8 percent increase in monthly trash rates starting in November. The increase will change the residential rate for residents with a 65-gallon cart from $15.65 per month to $16.40 per month.

Trash and recycling services in the city have been contracted out to Allied Waste Services since November 2009. The contract allows the company to make an annual rate adjustment that cannot exceed the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for water, sewer and trash-collection services.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the CPI is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services.

Michelle Gleba, communications manager with the city, said Allied Waste notified the city of the rate increase Sept. 20.

So the average price of gas is down 8.5% over last year, and they are getting a 4.8% increase. The average worker only earned 3.9% more and had to work 5.3% more hours. All this information from the same source .... The bureau of labor statistics. Can we also get a report on wages and jobs created or lost by the waste company since the contract went ino effect. I can't find the article now, but New Bloomfield just rebid their contract and their rates for trash service are much lower than our current rate and the trucks have to drive an extra 12 miles just to get there. Sounds like more corruption to me.

Dont tell the stateworkers about this. They got no raise, cuts to their benefits, and many are working 20 hours more a week just to stay caught up.

How many millions of dollars has Allied made from selling all the recycled trash from the citizens? One would think with all the recycling income that the trash pickup fee would be near zero.

Once again the City Hall is in cahoots with Allied, giving them a monopoly to stick it hard to the taxpayers/citizens.

It is horrible when our own elected local government is stealing from us.

I see, make it mandatory then slowly increase the rates. I need to get involved in a scam like this.

Those are monthly rates, not weekly rates. Another example of News Tribune sloppy reporting.

the per week rate was incorrectly posted in the city's press release. It has now been corrected to reflect the proper per month rate increase.

Still doesn't excuse the lack of proper proofing of a story before it is posted.

What happened to the movement that was underway to attempt to repeal this contract? I have not been able to keep up with new developments, anyone have any updates?
