Your Opinion: Present opinions without rancor

Dear Editor:

Whether or not I agree or disagree with Mr. Garber is irrelevant. But I must commend him for the example he sets on how to present an opinion without being offensive. Without arrogance or rancor he consistently provides his readers with well-written information as well as his sources. Such a presentation is more likely to be persuasive than one filled with name-calling, angry rhetoric and self-righteous indignation.

As a parent and grandparent I must confess that I have been guilty of using ineffective responses to my children and grandchildren when they asked me why they should do as I directed. Too often my answer was “Because I said so!” Obviously, that response did not contribute to their understanding and I missed the opportunity to contribute to their education.

So, Mr. Garber, I want to thank you for reminding those of us who are frequent letter writers (as well as those who read our letters) how to express ourselves in the most acceptable and effective manner. In the future I promise to do better than to use the “Because I say it’s so” approach.

Since I haven’t used all of my allotted words, I want to issue a request to other contributors to the Opinion Page. I am celebrating my 80th birthday this month and as a gift to me I would like to see some letters of praise and good will from writers who habitually say degrading things to each other. Wouldn’t it be fun for letter writer “A” to single out letter writer “B” and offer him or her kind words?

Peace.
