Your Opinion: Complacency not an option

Dear Editor:

How much does it cost to run for a U.S. Senate seat? One million? Two? Four?! Only if you want to lose. It costs considerably more if you want to stand before the crowd, fingers held in a "V' high above your head. The cost of running for office has grown so large that only a tiny sliver of Americans can donate anything significant, let alone run themselves.

Politicians must go to large donors such as the oil and gas industry, agrichemical companies, health insurers, and Wall Street - you know - the type of companies they're supposed to be regulating.

Likened by one seasoned senator to the ancient art of whoring, America's electoral system forces elected representatives, in both parties, to rely on special interests for their job security. Over the last 40 years our democracy has slowly been hijacked by the rich and big corporations. They're in charge and they'd like nothing better than to destroy social programs, eliminate unions and end regulation of any industry.

Wait a minute, that's what's happening right now! We need to stand up and demand to have our democracy back. If we don't fight, this great country is doomed. The economic wasteland America has become will be the norm and there will only be two classes, the rich and the rest of us poor suckers!

If we wait the choice will be made for us. Democracy will no longer exist and we'll have nobody to blame but ourselves. Complacency is not an option if we want America back.
