Kansas relaxes medical rules to aid tornado effort

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback issues an executive order allowing doctors, nurses and other medical professionals licensed in Missouri to provide services in Kansas until June 26.

Friday's order is in response to Sunday's tornado that killed more than 130 people in Joplin, Mo., less than 20 miles from the Kansas border. One of the locations hit by the tornado was Joplin's St. John's Regional Medical Center.

Brownback's order allows health care professionals licensed in Jasper County, where Joplin is located, to provide medical services or surgery in Cherokee or Labette counties in Kansas.

The order also waives certain requirements for licensing and permitting of medical professionals, as well as the annual insurance premium surcharge on health care providers.
