Jays set sights on another district title
Saturday, May 14, 2011
The Jefferson City Lady Jays have been winning district titles for the last 15 years.
They’re hoping to throw a Sweet 16 party tonight, as the Lady Jays look to continue their district-title streak at the Class 4 District 5 meet today at Rock Bridge.
But bringing home the hardware is not going to be that easy.
“This is Rock Bridge’s most complete team on both the boys and girls side,” Jefferson City coach Dan Ridgeway said. “We’ll see what we can do.”
The Lady Jays have put together a perfect season so far, but expect the Bruins to try to end Jefferson City’s district dominance.
“Our biggest challenge is going to be the district meet,” Ridgeway said. “Rock Bridge has had a phenomenal year.
“We’re probably the two favorites going into it.”
On the boys side, the Jays should dominate the pole vault. The Jays have the topfive qualifiers in the event, with Joey Burkett leading the way with a mark of 15-3.
“He’s one of the top four guys in the state right now,” Ridgeway said. “We’ve got five guys entered in the pole vault and now it’s just a matter of performing that day.”
But the Jays are hoping to score points in other events to capture their first district title since their 12-year streak ended in 2009 with a loss to Hickman.
“It’s going to be a wholeteam effort,” Ridgeway said. “We’re actually a better team than we were last year, but Rock Bridge and Waynesville are as good as they were last year. So it will probably come down to those three for the boys.”
