Mo. lawmakers pass bill on youth concussions

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Legislation addressing the risks of concussions among young athletes in Missouri has gone to Gov. Jay Nixon.

The bill applies broadly to youth sports. It requires that any player suspected of having a concussion remain sidelined until a doctor or health care provider with special training gives the all-clear.

The measure also requires athletics, health and school officials to jointly develop guidelines and information about concussions and brain injuries for coaches and athletes. Players and parents would need to sign annual forms with information about such injuries.

Young people generally take longer than adults to recover from concussions. Teens or children who return to competition while still recovering from a concussion risk an even greater second injury, which can lead to serious disability or death.

Lawmakers gave the bill final approval Thursday.
