Man struck, killed by equipment on Missouri train track

PEVELY, Mo. (AP) - Authorities in eastern Missouri say a man walking along a train track south of St. Louis died after being struck by a railroad maintenance vehicle.

The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Jefferson County town of Pevely (PEEVE'-lee), just west of Interstate 55.

KMOV-TV reports the rolling maintenance vehicle travels only about 25 mph on the track but cannot stop easily. A witness told police the driver hit the horn 25 to 30 times but the man kept walking on the tracks.

The 37-year-old man is described as a transient from Pennsylvania who was staying at a shelter, where a volunteer said he was extremely hard of hearing. His name has not been released.
