Fishermen credited with interupting suicide attempt

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - Three southeast Missouri fishermen are being credited with saving a suicidal woman.

The Southeast Missourian reports that the woman jumped from an Interstate 55 bridge Friday afternoon and into water known as the Diversion Channel near Cape Girardeau.

Bob Fischer, his son Richard and Bob's grandson Nathan Vomund, all of Marquand, had been fishing for carp and were under the bridge when they heard someone talking on the bridge. They looked up to see the woman, in her late 20s, legs dangling off the side. They saw her jump.

The men paddled their boat to her. She fought the men, screaming, "I want to die!" She finally allowed the men to bring her onto the boat.

The woman was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
