Two troubled hotspots that cater to young adults, including Lincoln University students, are facing renewed scrutiny after a fatal shooting last weekend.

Cortez Ray Bellamy, 24, was fatally shot in the head about 3:50 a.m. March 12 near the corner of Dunklin and Broadway streets. Police believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation that occurred at College Complex, 2425 Industrial Drive, and possibly another local nightspot.

Crime is Crime. Shut it down. If police have been called there 123 times then this place is costing the taxpayer a fortune as well endangering people.

Also, Sam Gaines should stop renting to groups that cause troube. He knows what is happening. I guess money talks.

The place isn't causing the problems. It's the people who are using it or at least some of those people. What is Jefferson City going to do, punish the place and just make these same people just go pay to cause their mayhem in another location?

Is Jefferson City going to generalize certain sectors of the population based on some physical characteristics shared by those few people who have caused some problems and just ban those groups wholesale from partaking in the activities that the rest of us are free to do? Watch out where you go with this one Jefferson City.

Its not the business that is responsible for this young man being shot anymore so than dozens of other things you can drum up to connect the dots with.

He shouldn't have been out carousing at 3 am. Nothing good ever happens after midnight. Shame on his parents for not teaching him better values.

It hasn't nothing to do with his parents! He was GROWN and could do what he wanted to do. People really need to get a GRIP and stop trying to judge people.

Just think we are getting another new bar up town to. Wonder how long it will take to be a problem to. Same thing that happend to Mikes will happen to the new bar. Hopefully they will have enough busines to pay the taxes.

Get a clue!! The places in question are not bars they are 'PRIVATE' establishments. People are drinking at these places unlawfully but as the article states since they are "PRIVATE' establishments the authorities must notify owner/mngr before entering, just as they would if they came to your home (w/o warrant). All 'Bars' in this city have a city/state issued liquor license. This place does not, hindering the authority.

Mikes? The reason Mikes went down the way it did is because the THUGS that frequent these place and are causing these problems had no place to go so they went to the most popular spot in town at the time, running off the good business they had. That was 6+ yrs ago after the old Hollywoods was shut down due to same problems here. These people still need a place to go and shutting them down will cause them to go to another establishment, running off their business and causing problems.

The new Bar? Very nice establishment/ owners and will be the elite place in town. They 'WILL' have enough business and will not be a place the after Hollywoods crowd or the latest crowd that frequented Mikes will like to be.

usmc00 I thank you for serving our country, we all owe you, but get the facts before speak. Your not sounding like a Marine

The nice places like this you speak of have dress codes IE nice slacks and collared shirts. Not just jeans and teeshirts. In NC that was what a classy place was like. I doubt this place will be like that and end up like the rest of the bars in town. I wish them luck but have my doubts. I just don't think the city needs another bar. We need something for teen agers and kids to do.

usmc00: The new owners of the property of the former Mike's Corner Pocket are personal friends of mine and I resent you trashing them when you have no idea who they are, and what their business model/plan even is! With the investment of money my friends are putting into this building and the rehabilitation of the structure you should be ashamed of your comments! I was in this building right after they purchased it and it was in terrible condition! The entire first floor is in the process of being gutted and completely remodeled with a real kitchen, game area, and yes a bar to. This business is almost 100% different in its concept to doing business then Mike's was. It is to be marketed as "Family Friendly fun place to dine and enjoy sports and games".

I have been to the College Complex on several occasions, and each time there has been five or six police officers who stand out in the parking lot until it closes, and if anyone comes outside they tell them that they need to leave the parking lot or go back inside. And whenever they feel the need a few of them come inside and just walk around. So I don't think its anything the police can do. I guess some people figure that its so many people around that they won't be picked out of the crowd if they start a fight, or let off a few shots after they get beat up. Also from what I've heard about the shootings that have happened, it is always someone from Columbia, or somewhere other than Jeff City who feels the need to pull a gun out.

Before we make assumptions about Lincoln University, lets state the facts. The people involved in the shooting is not affiliated with Lincoln University in any way. The main solution that I am hearing from other veiwers is to close down the college complex. As a college student in Jefferson City, the college complex is the only establishment that caters to Lincoln University college students. We hear the "cons" about the estabishment but what about all of the good things that the college Complex does for the community. I had a talk with the owner and he told me that he does movie night for the kids of the community. He gives scholarships to students to help further their education. The owner cannot control the people that enter his establishment so I dont think he should be punished for what took place. Also the police "believe" that the altercation started at the college complex. There isn't any proof that this statement is correct. Aslo they stated another local night spot but yet they have not named any other night spot just College Complex. That is a form of discrimination. This article was poorly written and the writer should do more research before trying to Bash the name of Lincoln University and the College Complex Thank You.

If this were a 1 time event I would agree with you. However, the police have been called to the establishment 123 times!!!! That is not a coincidence or racism, it is a problem. A huge problem.

The numbers were reported by the Jefferson City Police Department and were quoted in this article.

Lincoln has tarnished its own bad name in this town. We see the results of your wonderful "homecoming" every fall when the town gets overrun with crime the several days afterwards when the partiers don't have gas money to get back home to the inner city.

LincolnStudent 2 years, 2 months ago

Lincoln University throws a homecoming concert every year to reward students for their hard work. They bring in rap artist and R&B singers. This attracts people from everywhere. Lincoln does not have control over the people that comes to the concert. If we also look at University of Missouri, they go through the same problems.According to you, I guess all colleges and Universities tarnish thier names.

JCLifer 2 years, 2 months ago

Linn State Technical College has no problems like this.

0

asb 2 years, 2 months ago

Does Linn State even HAVE a homecoming? Of course they do, but nobody come to it. And don't tell Linn campus, city and county cops there aren't any problems at Linn Tech . . . proportionally the same as most school.

asb 2 years, 2 months ago

The tarnishing of Lincoln's image is usually done by bigots and fools. Any college brings some crime, from home, and from lack of supervision; but the trash talk comes from local bigots, period.

0

whocares 2 years, 2 months ago

So the bigots are commiting crimes??? doesn't matter who is talking about it, crime is crime.

0

asb 2 years, 2 months ago

Bigots trash Lincoln. Crime is crime. Two different sentences.
