Your Opinion: State lawmakers tip their hands

Dear Editor:

Our state Legislature has truly tipped their hand this week in how they think Missouri's budget problems should be solved-yet again, it's on the backs of working people.

In the same week that our state legislators froze the minimum wage for Missouri's lowest paid workers - those who are truly living paycheck to paycheck - the Missouri Legislature also gave wealthy corporations yet another tax break by eliminating the corporate franchise tax.

This tax was paid on corporate assets exceeding $10 million, at a rate of one-thirtieth (1/30th) of one percent - a very small fraction of a percent on only the most valuable assets. Corporations won't notice the difference in their bottom lines, but the public schools, programs and jobs that keep Missouri working sure will notice the $85 million in lost revenue that this tax brings in - especially at a time when our schools and communities need it more than ever.

The message from the Legislature couldn't be clearer; they want to help the rich get richer while keeping hardworking Missourians from getting ahead.
