Woman admits embezzling nearly $400K

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A northeast Kansas woman has pleaded guilty to embezzling nearly $400,000 from a Missouri construction company where she worked.

The U.S. Attorney's office says 37-year-old Tammie Lynn Cowell, of Overland Park, entered the plea Tuesday in federal court in Kansas City.

Cowell worked as the accounting manager for Obermiller Construction in Harrisonville, Mo. In her plea, she admitted forging company checks totaling nearly $214,000 and depositing them into her personal bank account from 2004 through 2009.

She also admitted misusing company debit cards, failing to deduct health insurance premiums from payroll checks and failing to pay taxes owed by Obermiller Construction.

Cowell faces up to 30 years in prison. No sentencing date has been set.
